  • Patient Room

These rooms are utilized only when the patient needs to stay 24 hours or more after surgery, when a patient has an extended illness or major injury requiring more nursing care, and when a patient is receiving treatments that are not available on an outpatient basis. The lighting in the patient room should include an exam light, general room (or ambient) lighting, a nightlight or chart light and a reading light. Control of the exam and chart lights is generally given to staff. The ambient and reading lights are usually controlled by the patient.
  • Perioperative

This includes the entire surgical process from admittance to discharge. The rooms in this area vary from the pre-op preparation room where the patient can wait with family prior to the procedure, to pre-anesthesia where the I.V. is started and any other pre-surgical medications are dispensed, on to the surgical suite, to PACU, post anesthesia care unit, where the patient is closely watched immediately following surgery and the post-op room where the patient rests the safest duration prior to discharge.
  • Task & Specialty

The tasks include evaluation of x-ray films, minor procedures including stitches and casting, MRI and CT scan rooms, and film processing in a darkroom. They also include restrooms, waiting areas, nursing stations and hallways. Lighting for these areas vary according to the facility and its function, the size and design of the space and the persons using the space such as staff, visitors, patients, administration, inspectors, etc.
  • Examination

Exam lighting ranges from a small incandescent unit for minor evaluations to the large boom mounted O.R. lights. Medical facilities use many classes of lights within this range.
  • General

General room lighting includes a selection of ambient and reading lights that work well in waiting areas, restrooms, hallways, offices and dining areas. These are just a few examples of applications for these versatile lights.
  • Assisted Living

Long term care centers and rehabilitation facilities require sufficient lumen output for the patients to see well, but not too much that their sense of depth is altered. Find fixtures from overbed lights, exam and nightlights to signage and wayfinding.
